Today, we announce the retirement of Sambo (Cheap Sandwiches) from racing—a greyhound who has given us memories that will last a lifetime.
From the moment he arrived at the kennel, it was clear there was something special about him. A consummate professional in everything he did, Sambo was one of the easiest greyhounds to train and possessed the heart, determination, and temperament that define a true champion.
Over the years, Sambo became much more than a racing greyhound—he became a fan favourite. Supporters got to know the character behind the athlete: whether he was relaxing on the sofa watching TV, sharing treats with his Labrador companion Cadbury, posing proudly for photographs, or making a beeline for the house after grooming in search of rewards, he had a knack for bringing smiles wherever he went.
For much of his career, Sambo endured the frustration of going close in some of the sport’s biggest events. He showed tremendous courage when finishing runner-up to his kennel mate and rival Bockos Diamond in the 2024 Irish Greyhound Derby, before suffering further heartbreak in the final of the 2025 English Greyhound Derby.
The breakthrough he so richly deserved finally arrived when he captured the 2025 TIME Dundalk International Open, securing his first major success. From there, Sambo elevated his career to another level.
His biggest success was the the unforgettable 2025 Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby campaign which culminated in a magnificent victory in the final, stopping the clock in 29.37. It was a triumph that delighted greyhound fans everywhere, and few could argue that any dog deserved to lift the Derby trophy more than Sambo that night.
His final victory came in the 2025 Winter Racing Festival Championship 550, where he defeated the outstanding Ballymac Setanta, adding another prestigious title to an already remarkable career.
Unfortunately, injuries interrupted preparations for the 2026 English Greyhound Derby campaign, where Sambo finished fourth in the opening round without being able to show his true ability. The hope had always been to return for one final challenge in the 2026 Irish Greyhound Derby, but injuries ultimately brought that dream to an end.
Retirement, however, marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Sambo will now stand at stud at Riverside Kennels, and he has already covered his first bitch. We look forward to seeing the next generation inherit the qualities that made him so special—his exceptional temperament, unwavering determination, and undeniable class.
Sambo’s story captured the hearts of so many, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greats. It has been an absolute privilege to train and care for such an extraordinary greyhound.
Thank you for everything, Sambo. Enjoy your well-earned retirement!
