Bockos Gold produced a performance for the ages at Shelbourne Park, claiming the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby and securing a record-breaking sixth Derby success for Graham Holland.

Winning the Irish Derby is always special, but this triumph will live long in the memory. In front of a packed Shelbourne Park crowd and a tremendous atmosphere, Bockos Gold showed immense pace, determination and class to land the €125,000 Classic and write his name into greyhound racing history.

Sent to traps at 8-1, Bockos Gold was overlooked by many in the betting as unbeaten favourite Bouncing Monarch dominated the market. However, those who had watched Bockos Gold progress through the competition knew he was developing into a stronger and more complete greyhound with each round.

Breaking well from trap five, Bockos Gold positioned himself perfectly behind the early leaders. As Bouncing Monarch and Sleight Of Hand battled for supremacy down the back straight, the race opened up at the perfect moment. Showing his trademark strength and race intelligence, Bockos Gold seized his opportunity, moving through to lead approaching the third bend.

From there, he never looked back.

Powering clear around the final two bends, Bockos Gold stretched away to score by four lengths in a sensational 29.05, becoming the fastest Irish Derby winner of all time.

The victory marked the team’s sixth Irish Greyhound Derby title and an incredible third consecutive Derby win. Bockos Gold now joins an extraordinary list of Derby champions trained by Graham, including Rural Hawaii, Lenson Bocko, Newinn Taylor, Bockos Diamond and Cheap Sandwiches.

After the race, Graham was typically humble in assessing the victory:

“There’s massive luck involved. The one and two got in each other’s way a little bit and that put us massively in the race. We were hoping to do a lot of work later on and all of a sudden he’s in front by the third bend and the rest is history. It’s lovely to be there again.”

Graham also praised the development of the son of Ballymac Bolger and Bockos Crystal throughout the Derby campaign:

“He’s grown into a stronger dog.”

This memorable success was celebrated by the Jolly Good Company Syndicate, made up of Graham Box, Bev Lochead, Thomas McNamara and Ciaran McNamara, along with breeder Shari-Anne O’Donnell and the entire Riverside Kennels team.
