Cheap Sandwiches is the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby champion!

In his third Derby decider in just ten months, our brilliant son of Burgess Bucks finally produced the performance we always believed he was capable of – a truly deserving champion.

For us, the victory also meant it secured our place in the record books. Having joined legends Tom Lynch and Gay McKenna last year on four Derby wins, the amazing Riverside Kennels team now stand with five Derby champions to our name – and Cheap Sandwiches is the dog who took us there.

Heading into the Final a warm favourite, runner up in last year’s Final, Cheap Sandwiches was looking to claim his biggest prize to date, and arguably that in greyhound racing the world over. The Derby roar was deafening as the hare came around. Then the lids lifted. Barefoot On Song exploded from trap three, Magical Mag was next, and Sandwiches was caught up a little in the middle. His sectional wasn’t his sharpest of the Derby, but we knew he was moving with intent. By the time they straightened into the back, he was already closing down the leader.

Trouble struck behind: Proper Heiress forced her way through on the inside, Magical Mag lost her footing, and Droopys Deploy was hampered. Glengar Silent was shuffled back too. Meanwhile, Sandwiches was beginning to launch his bid.

By the back straight, Cheap Sandwiches had joined Barefoot On Song and swept into the lead. At last, in his third Derby final in ten months, he was in front when it mattered most. The roar from the stands told us the crowd knew it too.

Barefoot On Song chased hard but our lad was too strong, moving three lengths clear by halfway. Proper Heiress battled away in third, while Glengar Silent tried to get involved from further back.

Sandwiches ran the third corner as he so often does – fluent, relentless, and full of power. From there he never put a foot wrong. His pace, his strength, his class , carried him all the way to the line to create history.

He crossed three lengths clear in 29.37, with Barefoot On Song running the race of her life in second and Glengar Silent finishing fast for third. Proper Heiress was back in fourth, while Droopys Deploy and Magical Mag had no luck.

The joy afterwards will live with us forever. Gary Walshe brought Sandwiches back up the track to a wall of noise, stopping for words with Virgin Media before we were swept into the presentation. The relief, the pride, the sheer delight – it was written across every face around us.

After five weeks of the most thrilling racing, Cheap Sandwiches had done it. He delivered the Derby crown, and few could argue he hadn’t earned his place in history. For us at Riverside Kennels, this is a moment we’ll never forget.

Earlier in the week, Graham and Dan Brassil, representing the victorious Bark Wahlberg Syndicate joined Barry Caul in looking back at the historic weekend that was.

True to form, Graham remains humble as he reflects on his record-breaking fifth Derby triumph with Cheap Sandwiches. He speaks warmly about his champion, while also paying tribute to his family and the entire Riverside Kennels team. Graham also shares updates on some of his other stars, including Bockos Diamond, Silverhill Freya following her UK success last week, and the strong team he has lined up for the Laurels.

For Dan Brassil, Derby night was one of the greatest moments of his life. With a lifetime’s involvement in greyhounds, he savoured the dream result as Cheap Sandwiches delivered Derby glory for him, his family, and the Bark Wahlberg Syndicate. Dan looks back on his journey in the sport, the story behind the syndicate, and the incredible thrill of owning greyhounds – capped by their champion, Cheap Sandwiches.

We’ll close by hearing from two of the most knowledgeable voices in greyhound racing as they reflect on a remarkable night — the night Cheap Sandwiches etched his name into the history books as the 2025 Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby Champion, bringing glory to proud owners the Bark Wahlberg Syndicate, breeder Joseph O’Connor, and all connections.
