Ballydoyle Valor was a gallant runner up of the Star Sports and Arc English Greyhound Derby as Deerjet Sydney claimed the crown with a fine showing for fellow Irish trainer, Pat Buckley.

It was the early pace that won Sydney the Derby as he flew from traps. Our two Finalists, Wolfe and Valor, held each other up on the run up as they rubbed shoulders most of the way to the first bend, with Valor just managing to force his way into 3rd spot at the turn. Devastatingly, disaster struck for Wolfe when he suffered an injury at the second bend that saw him drop out the back of the field. Up front, Valor was doing his upmost to reel in the early leader, moving into 2nd spot into the final turns he gave his all on the run in eventually being beaten by three quarters of a length.

From us all at Riverside Kennels, we’d like to congratulate Pat, family and connections of Deerjet Sydney on a foot perfect performance on the night to claim the English Derby crown.

Wolfe will now enjoy a happy and well deserved retirement following his injury during the race. He suffered a ligament injury in the hock during the race and was strapped up and made comfortable by the track vet on the evening. He travelled home well and the plan is he will return home to the proud Maloney family later this week. A champion racer who enjoyed success at the very top level throughout his carer, culminating in his 2020 Easter Cup victory.
