The last greyhound to achieve back-to-back victories in the St. Leger was Time Up Please in 1971-72, a feat Clonbrien Treaty set out to replicate when he entered the competition six weeks ago for the €30,000 prize. While his early rounds were steady, James and Muireann Murphy’s blue dog hit peak form in the semi-finals, showcasing blistering early speed that marked him as the one to beat in the final. In the end, he not only defended his title but also clocked the fastest time ever recorded in a St. Leger final.

As the traps opened, Miami King exploded from trap three, while Clonbrien Treaty was slow to emerge from six. Miami King was quickly joined by Barefoot On Fire, with Jaytee Craze in third and Coolavanny Otto close behind. Clonbrien Treaty, however, unleashed a stunning burst of early speed, swiftly passing his rivals and sweeping into the lead at the first bend with a wide-running style.

By the back straight, Clonbrien Treaty had created a two-length lead over Miami King, who held his position well. Barefoot On Fire was third, with the field strung out behind. Despite running wide, Clonbrien Treaty maintained a powerful gallop and extended his lead as he rounded the penultimate bend, with a fourth Classic title in sight.

With victories in the 2023 Con & Annie Kirby Memorial, the 2023 WillWeGo.com Irish St. Leger, and the 2024 Bresbet Easter Cup already to his name, Clonbrien Treaty was on the verge of a fourth Classic triumph. He maintained his strong pace into the home straight, holding off a late challenge from Miami King, who closed the gap to one and a half lengths. Barefoot On Fire finished third, a further length behind. Clonbrien Treaty’s final time of 29.28 was the fastest ever recorded in a St. Leger final, sealing his place in greyhound racing history.
