Qualification was the name of the game over the weekend and we did quite well all round as 6 of our runners progressed in their respective competitions.

Friday night saw us head to Tralee where Sidarian Vega and Rural Hawaii represented us in the Boylesports Race Of Champions, won last year by our very own Sidarian Blaze. Rural Hawaii finished third in the opening heat. Breaking moderately he was in 4th spot round the opening turns. Moving well down the far side he moved into second spot around the final turns before being passed on the run in by the battling 2 dog. The second heat saw Sidarian Vega also take third spot. Trying to move across to the rails at lid rise he had his run slightly held up but still managed to head round in second spot. Chasing the early leader, Paradise Silva, he kept within touching distance of him before being caught for 2nd on the run in by a neck. Happily both progress to next week’s Final which is worth €15,000 to the winner!

Over at Wimbledon, in the William Hill English Derby we had 3 of our team left in. Riverside Pat was first up in Heat 1. A slow break made it hard for him from the beginning. Showing his customary back straight pace he hit a wall of dogs hitting the third bend and was forced to check. This put paid to any hopes of him progressing further as he finished 5th on the night. In Heat 4 Clares Wonder trapped well enough but was led on the inside by Lenson Sanchez. Keeping a wide course round the first bend he lost a length of ground. Moving along the back straight he kept himself in contention before holding on for second place on the night. Our final runner, Gaytime Hawk lined up in Heat 8 where he finished second to progress. Leading up the inside he was joined at the bend by Jaytee Jet. As they came out the second turn he was head by the improving 6 dog. Chasing hard Hawk went down by a couple lengths.

At Shelbourne the highlight was the Sporting Press Irish Oaks Semi Finals, although the draw hadn’t been kind to us with all 3 of our runners in the second Semi Final, we were still hopeful of progression. Ballydoyle Honey went to traps a very hot favourite despite a far from ideal trap draw. Rising Pearl failed to show her usual brilliant trapping and was caught up in bunching on the run up. Hovex Princess had a lovely run up the rails heading towards the opening turn with Ballydoyle Honey showing sensible track craft and keep a wide line in 4th spot but edging closer round the turn. Quickening up out the second bend Honey showed brilliant acceleration to take control. The race was effectively over as a contest as she pulled further away at the 3rd turn. Hovex Princess had moved into second place at the third turn as she forced her way up the inside before running on well to hold on for second spot. Both qualify for next week’s prestigious final.
