Newinn Taylor had to work harder than ever before to win the final of the O’Neill Dog Food Open Puppy 525 at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night, but ultimately the brilliance of the Graham Holland trained star saw him maintain his unbeaten career record.
Despite a tricky draw in six, Newinn Taylor was hot favourite to land the €10,000 winner’s purse but after two strides his many supporters would have been feeling under pressure. For the first time in his short career, the son of Droopys Buick and Newinn Expert was slightly tardy at boxes.
In contrast, Ballymac Inspeed flew from the inside box and led in the early yards. Newinn Taylor had room to race, however, and this allowed him reach full speed before the turn. Displaying awesome early dash he headed Ballymac Inspeed before the turn and was two and a half lengths clear into the back straight.
With a big tail wind, the favourite increased his lead to almost four lengths by halfway, although things started to get interesting as they turned for home. Big finisher Ballymac Inspeed was closing on the leader and continued to advance all the way to the line but Newinn Taylor was not going to be denied.
Simon Taylor’s potential superstar held the brave efforts of Ballymac Inspeed to record a wonderful victory, crossing the line with a neck to spare over his rival in 28.38. Speed Winner was third from the opening yards and he finished a further three lengths adrift.
