It was another fantastic nights racing at Shelbourne on Saturday which saw us claim no fewer than 8 qualifying spots for the Quarter Final stages of the Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby.
There were some hugely impressive displays which not only saw us claim the qualifying spots, but also saw us walk away with 4 winners of the heats. The relatively inexperienced Sidarian Fern only enhanced her growing reputation as she ran out winner in Heat 1. Hitting the ground running from the traps she lead early, flowing along the far side she was never threatened and turning from home in front comfortably, she ran on well to stop the clock in 29.98.
Heat 2 saw Black Farren claim third place behind Tyrur Harold ensuring his progression. Clona Kid burst from traps in Heat 3 but couldn’t hold off Native Chimes into the 3rd bend, he went down by 2 lengths in second place but takes his place in the next round. Hovex Mick showed his determination in Heat 4, crowding on the run up knocked him out of his stride but he recovered well to run on powerfully and grab third and the all important qualification spot.
Droopys Cabaye kept up his unbeaten record in the competition, producing another big run in Heat 5. Turning out the 2nd turn in second spot he went through the gears along the back straight and led into the third bend. He wasn’t for catching and despite steering a slightly wide course off the last, went on to beat Good News by a length in 29.80.
Heat 6 saw Clares Rocket maintain his own unbeaten record too, despite smashing the boxes with the hare on the move. He broke well despite this and was in full control at the opening turn. Moving along the far side effortlessly he opened up an unassailable lead, he crossed the line seven and a half lengths in front, recording 29.58 which proved to be the fastest of the evening.
Sonic lined up in Heat 7 and he produced another brilliant performance. Breaking moderately he found himself in 3rd spot, some six lengths behind the leaders. Opening up along the far side he ran the early leaders down to catch them hitting the 3rd turn. With seemingly little space for passing he went into sat nav mode and shot up the inside of Hey Bound before switching up to the outside around the final turn to pass Buckos Dream. It was a superb bit of track craft. Powering up the home straight he went on to win by three lengths in 29.69.
Heat 8 saw Drive On Tipp and Clonbrien Hero line up against each other. Here Tipp seemed to take Hero’s racing room at the important stages of the race which ultimately contributed to his elimination, Tipp ran a good race in second spot to take his qualifying spot for the Quarter Finals.
The videos from all of our team’s runs can be seen on our Third Round Derby page found here.
The full draw for the Quarter Finals was made after racing on Saturday and throws up some more real mouth watering clashes. Qualification is still the name of the game with anything more a huge bonus, good luck to all our owners in the next round!
