The Boylesports Irish Derby Second Round got underway on Thursday evening and we were represented by 6 runners on the night. Having had a brilliant opening round, where all 16 of our team qualified, the kennels were on a high and confident of further progression with qualification the name of the game in these early stages.
Heat 1 affirmed this as Jo Jo Fantasy qualified in 3rd spot, but ensured he lines up next week in the Third Round. Heat 2 then saw Skywalker Manner lead early before being reeled in and passed, but progressed with his 2nd place finish.
Sidarian Pearl gave us our first winner of the evening as she burst from boxes in Heat 3, leading early and holding the challengers at bay she came home in 29.84. Another winner soon followed as Heat 4 was claimed by Rural Hawaii. Leading into the opening bend he looked comfortable before giving back some ground round the final turn, straightening for home pulled away again crossing the line in 29.67
Heat 5 saw a shock as Ballydoyle Honey was eliminated following early crowding before our final runner of the evening, Sonic, was hugely impressive when winning Heat 7. Running a brave opening bend, he squeezed round in front and pulled away before crossing the line in 29.44 to round off a successful evening on the whole.
Onto Saturday evening where we had a busy night in store. Highview Event was an impressive winner in the opening round but had to settle for 2nd place on the evening but safely progressed into Round 3. Heat 10 saw Slippery Thelma take the honours, showing good early pace she led round the opening turns and went on to score. Heat 11 was disappointing for the team which saw both our runners eliminated, Hovex Blaze and Bull Marker were slow away and paid the price, eventually coming home 4th and 5th respectively.
Heat 12 was another double with Vancouver Colin and Notorious Ben lining up. Notorious Ben qualified here but Vancouver Colin was eliminated as he could only manage 4th spot. Milldean Puma and Slippery Louise went in Heat 14 where both qualified. Milldean Puma ran on to take 3rd place whilst Slippery Louise ran well and came in 2nd. Heat 16, the final heat of the night, and Skywalker Rory was in the middle of bunching into the opening turn, thankfully he showed good determination to hold his ground and stay in contention before running a good race to take the runner up spot.
Having gone into the Second Round with 15 runners, we are extremely happy to get 11 through to the next round. Each round is getting harder, but there are no easy races in the toughest competition in our sport. Qualification is the aim, anything more is a huge bonus! Good luck to all owners and connections with runners in the Third Round on Saturday!
