It was an amazing 1-2 for the kennels as Ballydoyle Honey was crowned the Queen at Shelbourne Park this evening when securing victory in the Sporting Press Irish Oaks Final.
Heading to traps she was a hugely hot favourite at 1/5. However, no one told kennel mate and litter sister, Hovex Princess, and it wasn’t the straight forward procession that many predicted. Princess flashed from traps and made the bend in front of the field with Honey being forced to move off around the opening turn. Down the far side Princess was still in control and was moving nicely but by this time Honey had moved menacingly into second spot along the far side.
As they turned in to the third bend Princess still had control and Honey was having to motor to make up ground on her. Rounding the final turn Honey was still behind Princess by a length or so but as they straightened up Honey started to eat into that lead before crossing the line approx. 3/4 length to the good.
She completes a memorable Irish Puppy Oaks and Irish Oaks double for us and owner Alison Coxon.
